FOXSTEP
foxkit, foxpaw, foxstep
"ticked, pale ginger tom with golden eyes."
NAME EXPLANATION:
fox for his ginger pelt;
step for his agility and stealthiness.
AGE:
forty moons.
RANK:
warrior (deputy?)
EXTENDED APPEARANCE:
PERSONALITY:foxstep is quite the athletic looking cat, lithe and lean. while he is slender, he is certainly not delicate looking. he has compact muscle hidden beneath his close-cropped pelt that seems to ripple as he moves. foxstep, while clearly powerful, is light on his feet and glides gracefully when he runs. he is proud of his slim frame and light paws; he is the very image of a windclanner, though he rarely mentions his dissenting ancestors. his face is very angular; he has a distinctly pointed muzzle and wedge-shaped head, topped with large and always-erect ears.
foxstep's pelt is sleek and short, barely extending past his skin. it's a unique color that attracts a lot of attention - he's painted a nearly solid dusky ginger, extremely fox-like in appearance. he is ticked with darker fur on his spine, tail-tip, and m-marked forehead. he also has a bit of white ticking scattered throughout his pelt. his chin and throat are white, a stark contrast against his ginger fur. his eyes are almond shaped and a particularly bright shade of gold. they are constantly darting about, glistening and gleaming, in order to take in every little bit of his surroundings.
FAMILY:
charismatic - foxstep is always friendly other cats, whether they're elders, queens, apprentices, or fellow warriors. he never misses an opportunity to ask someone how they've been feeling recently or inquire about their relationships. he feels a close kinship to his clanmates and takes a sincere interest in each of their lives. it's hard to not enjoy foxstep's company.
good-humored - foxstep has quite the quick wit and is eager to show it off. he always is looking for clever ways to make others laugh, believing firmly that laughter is the best medicine. he is constantly picking on other cats, but not in an intentionally malicious manner. occasionally his sarcasm can be taken too harshly, but it always comes from a good place.
ambitious - although he is young compared to some senior warriors, foxstep is certainly not inexperienced. he has led many patrols and hunting parties and regards himself as a great leader. he strives to be the very best warrior of wildclan and hopes to become deputy, already mentoring two apprentices and considered a senior warrior. he is quite the suck-up to badgerstar, always trying to make himself look like the most capable cat of the clan in front of him.
flirtatious - foxstep loves she-cats. while he isn't the most powerful or handsome cat around, he is certainly the most flirtatious. he uses a careful system of teasing and complimenting in order to woo the opposite sex and is always ready to flaunt his superior hunting and fighting skills. despite this, he hasn't yet found the right she-cat to take as a permanent mate. he's always looking, though.
sly - this clever tom certainly knows how to get what he wants. like his namesake, he is rather sly and even conniving at times. it is within his abilities to be deceitful in order to achieve what he desires. he is especially cunning, certainly a cat you wouldn't want to cross.
arrogant - foxstep has no shortage of confidence. in fact, his confidence is pretty off-putting to some more humble cats. he knows he's fast. he knows he's strong. he knows he's one of wildclan's best hunters. he knows how well-liked he is. he is boastful and perhaps a mite too quick to assert himself. he truly believes that he is one of the greatest cats of the forest - whether this is true or not remains to be seen.
separatist - foxstep was raised hearing hushed stories of windclan's glory from his mother and uncles, and is a strong believer in separating the clans back into their original forms. he believes that wildclan itself is a huge violation of the warrior code and spits upon what it truly means to be a clan cat. he has the fighting spirit of his ancestors.
rebellious - while talks of rebelling against wildclan have been quiet and only half-serious, foxstep would definitely be open to creating a more organized resistance. he has only confided his feelings of rebellion in a few other cats, but is willing to open up about them in the future if he feels support from other cats. while he does not think violence is necessarily the key to returning the clans to their original states, he will fight with tooth and claw if necessary.
faithful - foxstep is a fervent believer in the sanctity of the warrior code and starclan. he vehemently believes that the very nature of wildclan defies starclan. the recently harsh leaf-bare has especially proven this to him; starclan is punishing them for going against their sacred warrior code.
immediate family - russetflower (mother), gorsewhisker (brother), cherrynose (sister).
distant family - adderclaw (uncle), gingertail (cousin), dappledwing (cousin).
other relations - bramblefang (former apprentice), poppyflight (former apprentice), bluecloud (former mate).
HISTORY:
russetflower was always a kind she-cat, but no member of wildclan ever saw her as the queen type. she clearly preferred to be out in the forest, not cooped up in camp. she earned much respect from her clanmates and was considered an invaluable warrior to wildclan. needless to say, it was a surprise when she became pregnant at a ripe sixty-six moons. she was tight-lipped about who the father was, never revealing his identity to anyone, not even her own kits. she ended up being confined to the nursery for almost her entire pregnancy due to intense discomfort; the medicine cat said that her pain was due to her older age and tiny frame. she finally gave birth to three kits in her litter: gorsekit, cherrykit, and foxkit.
while russetflower wasn't initially happy about being a queen, she loved her three kits fiercely. she had originally planned to return to the warrior den only a few moons after giving birth, but soon changed her mind when she realized how much she loved being a mother. though their kithood was fairly uneventful, it was full of many adventures and good times; the three kits were an energetic bunch. russetflower, along with her brother adderclaw, told them many tales about the glory days in windclan. she urged them to not mention it to anyone else; their heritage was to be their little secret.
adderclaw eventually took foxkit as an apprentice. foxpaw was an eager little tom, always aiming to impress his typically stone-faced uncle adderclaw. they had a much tighter bond than most mentors and apprentices due to both their kinship and their reverence of windclan. foxpaw, cherrypaw, and gorsepaw became warriors sooner than average due to both a shortage of warriors after a harsh leaf-bare and an abundance of natural talent shared between them. the newly-named foxstep got an enormous boost of confidence due to his accelerated pace of becoming a warrior.
he almost immediately approached badgerstar about getting his own apprentice, despite his young age. he had his golden eyes dead set on a litter of kits about five moons old and already knew which one he wanted - bramblekit. sure enough, when bramblekit became bramblepaw, he was paired up with foxstep. there was a serious learning curve - foxstep had no idea how to be an effective mentor, as his own had really been more like a friend. he tried this method of mentoring at first, but bramblepaw often acted up. foxstep did all he knew to do - he approached his apprentice's mother, bluecloud.
bluecloud and foxstep became very close after their originally impersonal talks about bramblepaw's rambunctious behavior. despite their unusual age gap - bluecloud was forty moons to foxstep's twenty - they quickly fell in what they called love. bluecloud's mate hawktail, who had given her many litters, had recently abandoned her. she was taking foxstep as what some might consider a "rebound." the young foxstep was simply in awe of her beautifully plush blue-gray coat and sparkling blue eyes, barely noticing that she was only with him to spite her old mate. foxstep was overjoyed when bluecloud became pregnant, but she soon revealed that the father of her kits was hawktail, not foxstep. he was crushed, of course, but he quickly realized that what he and bluecloud had wasn't really love anyway.
foxstep, now free to focus on his warrior duties, straightened bramblepaw out and finally taught him well. only a few moons after bramblepaw became bramblefang, he took on poppypaw as an apprentice. she proved much easier to train due to her more docile and even-tempered nature. she ended up being almost as swift as foxstep, much to his pride. she became poppyflight. foxstep maintains a close relationship with his two former apprentices and loves to mentor; he is eager to eventually take on a third.
recently, foxstep has been eying the coveted spot of wildclan deputy. he has grown increasingly irritated with badgerstar's senile ways and refusal to appoint a new deputy, though he would never let badgerstar know this. he has been enormously focused on showing off his abilities to badgerstar, always volunteering to organize and lead patrols. in addition, he's almost been sycophantic in his praise of his leader, doing everything he possibly can to get on his good side. however, nothing seems to be working - he just can't seem to get badgerstar to realize that he's perfect for the position of deputy. foxstep is really just waiting for badgerstar to die at this point.

foxstep had to really shake himself awake.
it was extremely cold outside, though it was only the beginning of leafbare. the bleak scent of snow floated in the freezing air; the impending blizzard would be the first of the season, and foxstep assessed that it would be upon his clan soon. he shivered at the thought of it, vehemently hating every snowflake that descended onto wildclan’s territory. the deputy’s close-cropped pelt didn’t have much insulation to keep him warm, that was for certain, and its ginger color was a stark contrast against the blank whiteness of snow. he was definitely not looking forward to what was sure to be a long and unforgiving leaf-bare; almost as much as he wasn’t looking forward to the difficult day ahead of him.
he had been having such pleasant dreams while asleep in his den, warm and comforted by the multi-hued pelts of his clanmates. while he was free to move into a more private den, foxstep chose to continue sleeping with the warriors of wildclan. for now, anyway. he wasn’t doing it because of a desire to seem humble to what were now his subordinates; he had entirely more selfish reasons. he was cold. the best way to keep himself warm at night was to snuggle up with his clanmates – especially if he was nestled between two pretty she-cats, as he was last night. do i really have to get up?
on any other morning, he would have been perfectly content, even eager, to wake up before dawn and perform his duties as a deputy. he had been going going going since he moved up in rank only one moon ago, rarely stopping to do anything for himself. he had to remind himself to groom his pelt! he made sure to do every single task possible, from organizing patrols to discussing clan affairs with froststar to helping out with chores better suited to an apprentice. there was not enough time in the day to get everything done, but he loved the feeling of importance being deputy gave him. and today was the day he got to formally meet his new apprentice! he thought fondly of his time spent mentoring bramblefang and poppyflight. he was more than pleased when froststar told him that he could have his pick of the oldest litter in the clan yesterday.
but the oldest litter in the clan was only five moons old.
at first, foxstep didn’t realize how young they were. they certainly seemed old enough to be apprentices – the two kits, mistkit and antkit, were incredibly rambunctious. they were constantly in the middle of camp play-fighting, and foxstep was already impressed with mistkit’s mind for fighting despite her smaller size. the kits were born to strong, healthy warriors during a particularly plentiful greenleaf. they were definitely approaching apprentice-size despite their age. but soon enough, foxstep remembered when exactly they were born. it was only five moons ago. could it have been a mistake on froststar’s part?
doubtful. foxstep could sense his leader’s unease about the upcoming leaf-bare – everyone seemed worried; even leaf-fall was unusually barren that year. foxstep knew intuitively that froststar was rushing the apprenticeship of the kits in order to have more cats to hunt, and on the surface this seemed reasonable. kits aren’t allowed to hunt, and the more cats hunting, the more prey caught. these kits weren’t even that much younger than what was standard for apprentices.
however, breaking the warrior code was against foxstep’s beliefs. he knew deep within him that he was loyal to starclan and the warrior code before wildclan. wildclan was based on principles that directly defied the warrior code, anyway – what ever happened to the clans not being able to unite in order to drive out another clan, like what happened before the birth of wildclan? are all parts of the code that include things about clan relations simply to be ignored? he shook his head, clearing it of undeniably rebellious thoughts. not now. he was no longer dreading leaving his den. a spark flew within him, lighting his golden eyes with a fiery determination to not allow this denial of the warrior code. he felt warm from the inside out.
he gave himself one last shake before padding silently to froststar’s den, snow finally falling.
