Brightpaw was bored.

Now, she wasn’t bored in a I-have-nothing-to-do kind of way. Not really. She’s sure if she was that bored, she could just go find some warrior to take her on a walk or a hunt or something. Fennelwhisker was probably around here somewhere. But she was bored in more of a I’m-lonely-and-want-a-friend way. She didn’t feel like training or other Clan duties at the moment. It was late afternoon and she really just wanted another apprentice to play with or something. Lounging out in the sun and talking to a friend sounded pretty great to the lonely she-cat.

But where was everyone?! Out in the clearing, she didn’t really see anyone nearby and figured a few midday hunting parties must have gone out earlier or something, depleting the amount of Clanmates in camp. But she wasn’t about to go searching around Fourtrees, looking like a helpless kit that’s lost its mother. She sighed. All she wanted was someone to do something with. She wasn’t picky at all! Was that really so much to ask for? It was a beautiful Greenleaf day. Someone else surely had to be looking for some fun.

Cinderpaw loped into camp awkwardly, his jaws stretched to carry the feathery bodies of the two sparrows he had managed to catch. Green-leaf meant that the Wildclan territory was filled with prey and allowed the Wildclan cats to enjoy a time of easy kills and full bellies. Cinderpaw had been out on his own at sunrise to go hunting, knowing that he couldn’t eat himself until the clan had been fed.

Dropping his contribution onto the fresh kill pile, the fluffy grey tom took the time to give his full, fluffy coat a shake, inwardly cursing the glaring sun overhead. Green-leaf may bring prey but it also brought unwanted things like heat. The apprentice swung his head around to gaze at the sunlit camp, trying to find a shady spot where he could curl up and rest for a bit.

He was quick to spot the scrap of black and white fur teetering near the fringe of the camp. Brightpaw, right? He wondered, trying to remember the little apprentice’s name. He still remembered the fuss and gossip that had gone round when the little apprentice first came to Wildclan, not born as a kit but simply walking in and asking to join. However, after a while the gossip had died down and Cinderpaw had heard little more about her, only occasionally seeing her around camp. He wasn’t really the kind to go round starting conversations, which is probably why he had yet to even speak to the apprentice, but right now the little black and white she-cat looked so alone that he couldn’t help but walk over, twitching his ears in greeting.

“Hullo!” he meowed softly, trying to not seem intimidating. He was quite large for his age, while little Brightpaw looked as if she was quite a few moons undersized. It probably came from having lived by herself outside the clan for a while. “You’re Brightpaw, right? I’m Cinderpaw, I don’t think we’ve met properly yet.”

Brightpaw plopped down on the ground, just on the edge of giving up her endeavor, when a large gray apprentice came up to her, calm and friendly. She racked her brain, trying to remember his name (Sootpaw? Coalpaw? Something about stuff that’s been burnt.) She had seen him around camp a few times, but never had the nerve to approach him. She noticed him twitching his ears in hello and quickly sat up to greet him. “Hullo!” he said as he walked over to her. “You’re Brightpaw, right? I’m Cinderpaw, I don’t think we’ve met properly yet.”

She shook her head, forgetting her manners for a second. “I don’t think we have either,” she replied. “Yes, I’m Brightpaw. It’s nice to finally meet you, Cinderpaw.” She twitched her tail happily. It was lovely to meet new people, even within her Clan, and Cinderpaw seemed really nice. WildClan was slowly becoming a family to her, but apparently there were still a few cats she had yet to meet. The list of apprentices seemed like a pretty good place to start. “How was the hunting this morning?” she asked, recalling seeing him drop off a couple birds in the fresh kill pile.

Cinderpaw relaxed onto his haunches as Brightpaw spoke, his long, feathery tail brushing over the dry camp ground.

“Hunting’s great!” he responded, twisting his head to glance back at the full fresh kill pile, “It’s Green-leaf so there’s plenty to catch. The birds practically flew into my jaws!” He purred, scraping a paw over the ground bashfully.

“Have you been hunting yet today? Or are you going out with your mentor later? Birchflower said she was going to take me for battle-training later today” Cinderpaw said proudly, his whiskers twitching in excitement as he thought about the prospect of the training session. He couldn’t wait to be a warrior and be able to defend his clan alongside his clanmates.

A rumbling sound made Cinderpaw flatten his ears with embarrassment. He hadn’t really thought about eating when he got back but his stomach was reminding him that he hadn’t ate since last night. His bright olive eyes swiveled to gaze once more at the fresh kill pile. He gave a breathy laugh as he looked back at Brightpaw.

“Sorry. I haven’t eaten in a while. Do you mind if I go get something to eat? I’ll be right back,” Cinderpaw rose to his paws and took a few steps away before quickly twisting around again, his dark grey ears swiveling to face backwards “Where are my manners. Have you eaten yet? Would you like me to get you something?”
