Batears
"a long-haired black tom with massive blue eyes."
NAME EXPLANATION:
Bat - Dewshine named her son in part for his pitch black colour (bats live in dark caves) but also because of his massive 'bat-like' ears.
Ears - To finish the original part of his name, ears is to second the attention drawn to his huge ears.
AGE:
39 moons
RANK:
Medicine Cat

EXTENDED APPEARANCE:Bateyes' most striking aspect is his yes. Massive and bright blue, they sit deep in his face. His orbs are far larger then the average cat's should be and many a Clan-mate has speculated that it is because he hardly seems to blink and they have just stretched out over the years. The colour itself seems to be an odd mix between untouched water and the sky at mid-day.
His face is not normally shaped. In addition to the massive eyes, his ears are almost bat-like. They make his head look tiny in comparison which, of course make his eyes seem that much larger. Potentially the most humerous part of his large ears is the fact that he seems to be deaf half the time. His snout is fairly short, but not as squat as certain breeds of cats. His whiskers are very long, due to his massive ears.
And of course, we cannot discuss Bateyes without talking about his massively beautiful pelt. It is his pride and joy. When he isn't staring at the sky (or, you know, doing his job) he is taking care of his pelt. His fur is fairly long most of the time and it is pitch black.
He keeps his teeth and claws very short. He is a grinder and can't help it when he sleeps - his teeth are naturally filed down. In addition, he is constantly filing his teeth and claws through herb gathering and preparation.
PERSONALITY:Bateyes is obsessive. He started out as a fairly normal kit. Ok, that is a lie, Bateyes was never normal! He was born practically staring at the sky, even before he could see. That has to do something to your head.
Bateyes has always had a deep relationship with the stars. He 'claims' they spoke to him, even before he became a Medicine Cat. But when really asked about it, he said it wasn't StarClan that spoke to him, the stars themselves did. In every twinkle he could hear them sing. Of course, everyone else though the kit was crazy. And he never denied it. There is no proof whatsoever that he actually hears anything from the stars. Maybe he makes it up as an excuse to talk to himself. Maybe StarClan is messing with him...Who knows!
In addition to his star obsession, he also quickly grew to love the elder's stories. He would sit for hours in their dens, listening to everything they had to say. Sometimes, to the annoyance of certain cats who will remain unnamed, he would correct them or finish the story for them. One of his favorite stories (along with most other kits') was the joining of the Clans and WildClan came to be born.
Despite all of his quirks, Bateyes is an amassing Medicine Cat. He takes his job with the highest respect and he knows that his first and only duty is to his Clan. He has an un-matched knowledge of the more...peculiar methods of healing and has plans in the future to implement them and test them more thoroughly (occasionally scarring his Clanmates when he talks about it).
He has never cared what anyone thought. He knows that he is right - about the stones, about the stars - and he doesn't need anyone else to know it. Of course, the acceptance and approval of his Clanmates maters deeply to him, it is not necessary for him to continue life.
FAMILY:
mother Dewshine
father Featherdust
mentor Blackberry
HISTORY:Bateyes was born in the depths of summer. When the little creature was born, his small face was turned toward the sky. Of course, he couldn't see yet but everyone thought it was a sign. He knew where the stars were - he could feel them!
It really wasn't long until the only-kit was able to go outside and explore. As predicted, he spent quite a bit of his time rolled onto his back staring at the sky just outside the nursery. Once he was old enough to wander around on his own, he found a small perch in the camp that let him get just a bit closer to the sky. Of course, that simply wasn't enough for him and even before he was apprentice age he was sneaking up to the Leader's Den to try to get even closer! He was caught quickly and scolded.
It was obvious that this passive kit was not going to be a warrior and he was taken in as the Apprentice Medicine Cat at his six moon ceremony. He was thrilled and instantly started learning everything he could. And it wasn't long until he was trying to correct his mentor! While amused of the funny-looking kit's enthusiasm, he tried his best to keep the kit on track.
Over time, he grew very close to his mentor and they formed a bond unlike any other. Although she was not related to him by blood, she became like a second mother to him. Blackberry retired to the elders den nearly ten moons ago, leaving Bateyes to take over as Medicine Cat. He is still around for him to ask questions, but Bateyes has learned to no longer use his mentor as a crutch.
Recently, he has developed a new obsession and idea. For generations, the cats have used herbs to heal their sick, but what about stones? He has seen their healing prowess first paw and he knows that with the addition of stones as healing instruments, his Clan would be far safer. He plans to begin 'testing' with his next few patients...Once, when he was still fairly young, he had been told to go out and gather herbs for his mentor. Dutifully, he did so but was distracted by something shiny down a small hole. He did everything he could and finally he was able to fish the small rock out of it's cavern. He was impressed and brought it home with him.
A few days later, a warrior came in with a terrible cough. Blackberry gave him an herb to try to calm it but the next day she returned and it was much worse. The Medicine Cat instructed her to sleep in his den tonight.
After she had gone to sleep, Crystalpaw had a deep desire to give the rock to the she-cat. He snuck over to where she was sleeping and hid the stone in the nesting. The next morning, as if a miracle had struck, she was better! Of course there was minor lingering of the cough but she was able to return to patrols and hunts and move back to her own den. Crystalpaw was massively impressed and even Blackberry couldn't explain what had happened.
Bateyes has since spent his free time trying to collect as many varieties of stones as he could find through the territory. He has quite a collection now and through minor experimentation knows what some of them seem to do. But he isn't done yet, he has a lot more he still needs to figure out!

RP SAMPLE:He had gone out to look for something interesting in the territory. He had hoped to come back with a cool stone or some herbs to surprise Flutterfur. Of course - he hadn't been paying any attention to the clouds that rolled in over head.
At near sun-high, he'd heard a large crack and fear ran through him. His large eyes slowly moved upwards as the first few drops of rain started to strike the ground and his upwards staring face. He blinked a few times and spit out the water that had pooled in his mouth before glaring at nothing in particular. Why hadn't they warned him!? did they think this was funnier!?
No matter. He was determined to impress his mentor and decided to press
on in the rain. He was already wet, not like it could really get much worse, right?
Wrong!
It didn't take long for the long-haired kit to turn into a drowned rat. But oh, was he going to see this through! With his pace quickened, he began to search quicker for something...anything to bring back to the camp! Anything!
Then he spotted it - a small patch of green in a corner of what used to be a small thunderpath. He moved to it quickly, his paws almost being absorbed by the muddy paths until he found it. What was it? he didn't know at the moment and didn't really care. He quickly pulled it into his mouth and turned tail for home.
CRACK
Thunder boomed outside and the lightning flashed just as the door creaked open. Standing int he opening was a small black...thing with massive blue eyes. With fur sticking in every direction possible in some places and plastered to his body in others, Galaxypaw was actually quite a frightening site. And from his mouth dangled the sad, limp catchweed.
He quickly scuddled into the house and collapsed on the floor breathing heavily. He weighed almost twice as much now as he was used to and coming back had been hard work. But man had he done it! He spat out the weeds and looked at the pathetic stalks. What he saw almost made him cry. There was no way the burrs would be of any use now...everything had been for nothing. He sighed and glanced over to the window -
Where is mentor and leader were sitting. Yeiks!
He jumped up suddenly and his head snapped to attention as he looked at them. "Sorry for dragging so much water in!"[/blockquote
